Save the Med – Regenerating the Mediterranean Sea

Save the Med is a nonprofit foundation based in Mallorca, Spain, dedicated to restoring marine biodiversity and helping coastal communities become active guardians of the Mediterranean. The organization's story began in 2011 with a simple invitation to join a beach cleanup. Today, Save the Med combines marine science, ecological regeneration, environmental education and community participation to create lasting change across the Balearic Islands.

Restoring Marine Ecosystems

Save the Med believes that protecting nature is only the beginning. Its long-term vision is to help damaged ecosystems recover and thrive. Through its Areas Under Regeneration approach, the foundation brings together scientific research, local knowledge and community-led conservation. Projects such as Sa Dragonera Blava and U Nord Blau focus on the coastal regions of Andratx and Pollença, connecting marine biodiversity protection with sustainable local development and community involvement.

Protecting Sharks and Rays

The Mediterranean is home to vulnerable shark and ray species facing threats from fishing activities, habitat degradation and environmental change. Through Stellaris Action, Save the Med collaborates with partners to support the recovery of the nursehound shark in Balearic waters. Its Manta Project studies the endangered spinetail devil ray, investigating migration patterns and habitat use to inform conservation strategies. The Shark BRUV initiative uses remote underwater video systems to monitor shark populations and gather scientific evidence for improved protection.

Preventing Plastic Pollution

Save the Med also addresses marine pollution at its source. Its HAPI Method helps businesses and institutions evaluate the environmental impacts of single-use products and identify more sustainable alternatives. Through Dos Manos and Game Changers, students participate in beach surveys, scientific activities and educational workshops that encourage practical solutions to plastic pollution.

Empowering Local Communities

A central part of Save the Med's mission is to involve local people in protecting the places they know best. The foundation works with schools, scientists, public institutions, businesses and community groups to develop environmental initiatives that respond to local needs. By connecting land and sea, scientific knowledge and community action, Save the Med promotes a regenerative future for the Mediterranean.

A Living Mediterranean for Future Generations

Save the Med demonstrates that successful marine conservation depends on more than protecting individual species. Through ecosystem regeneration, scientific research, education and community engagement, the foundation works toward a Mediterranean where marine life and coastal communities can flourish together.
