Sea Change Project – Protecting the Great African Seaforest

Sea Change Project is a South African nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting marine biodiversity through scientific research, underwater exploration, education and powerful environmental storytelling. Founded in 2012, the organization brings together filmmakers, naturalists, scientists and storytellers who share a deep connection with the Great African Seaforest, an extraordinary underwater kelp ecosystem along the coast of southern Africa.

The Great African Seaforest

The Great African Seaforest is home to thousands of marine species, including many found nowhere else on Earth. Its towering kelp forests provide shelter, food and breeding habitats for fish, sharks, octopuses and countless invertebrates. Sea Change Project works to raise awareness of the ecological importance of these underwater forests and inspire their long-term protection.

My Octopus Teacher

The organization gained international recognition through the Academy Award-winning Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher. The film follows Sea Change co-founder Craig Foster as he develops an extraordinary relationship with a wild octopus while freediving in a South African kelp forest. Through intimate underwater cinematography, the documentary introduced millions of viewers to the intelligence, vulnerability and beauty of marine life.

1001 Seaforest Species

Sea Change Project combines its filmmaking expertise with scientific research. Its 1001 Seaforest Species initiative documents the extraordinary biodiversity of the Great African Seaforest, creating a visual and scientific record of marine species and their ecological relationships. Working with research partners, the project aims to improve public understanding and strengthen the case for protecting kelp forest ecosystems.

Connecting People with Nature

Beyond films and research, Sea Change Project develops educational resources, exhibitions and community programs that encourage people to reconnect with the natural world. Its approach is based on a powerful idea: scientific knowledge is essential, but emotional connection can inspire people to act. By revealing the hidden beauty of underwater ecosystems, Sea Change Project helps build a future in which marine biodiversity is understood, valued and protected.
