Fair Seas – Protecting Ireland's Ocean

Ireland's ocean waters are home to extraordinary marine wildlife, from whales, dolphins and seabirds to sharks, cold-water corals and important seabed habitats. Yet much of this marine environment remains without effective protection. Fair Seas is a coalition of leading Irish environmental organizations and networks working to change that. Established in 2022, the campaign brings together scientific expertise, environmental advocacy and public engagement to secure stronger protection for Ireland's seas.

Protecting 30% of Ireland's Seas by 2030

Fair Seas is campaigning for at least 30% of Ireland's marine territory to be designated as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by 2030, including 10% under strict protection. Marine Protected Areas can help safeguard vulnerable species, protect important habitats and allow damaged ecosystems to recover. However, designation alone is not enough. Fair Seas advocates for a coherent, scientifically informed and effectively managed network of protected areas, supported by strong legislation and adequate long-term funding.

Turning Scientific Evidence into Action

The coalition produces research, policy recommendations and educational resources to help identify priority areas for marine conservation. Its work highlights the importance of protecting ecologically significant habitats while considering the needs of coastal communities and sustainable marine activities. Fair Seas collaborates with researchers, environmental organizations, policymakers and other stakeholders to ensure that marine protection decisions are based on reliable evidence.

Giving Coastal Communities a Voice

Healthy seas are essential not only for wildlife but also for the people who depend on them. Through public events, consultations and its Real Voices initiative, Fair Seas encourages fishermen, coastal residents and marine stakeholders to participate in discussions about the future of Ireland's waters. The campaign believes effective conservation must involve the communities most closely connected to the sea.

Campaigning for Stronger Marine Protection Laws

Fair Seas has consistently called for ambitious legislation to establish and manage Marine Protected Areas in Irish waters. In July 2026, the Irish government published the General Scheme of proposed MPA legislation, an important step toward creating a stronger legal framework for marine conservation. Fair Seas continues to advocate for effective implementation, meaningful ecological protection and Ireland's commitment to the global 30-by-30 conservation target.

Building a Movement of Ocean Stewardship

By bringing together environmental organizations, scientists, coastal communities and the wider public, Fair Seas is helping create a stronger movement for ocean protection. Its vision is an Ireland where thriving marine ecosystems support biodiversity, coastal livelihoods and future generations.
