Global Seaweed Coalition – Advancing Sustainable Seaweed Solutions

The Global Seaweed Coalition is an international partnership dedicated to developing a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible seaweed sector.  Founded in 2021 by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Lloyd’s Register Foundation and the United Nations Global Compact, the Coalition brings together researchers, businesses, coastal communities and policymakers to unlock the potential of seaweed while protecting marine ecosystems. In September 2026, the Coalition established a dedicated foundation under the umbrella of the CNRS Foundation, strengthening its long-term independence and capacity to support international projects.

Protecting Marine Ecosystems

Seaweed forests and coastal algae habitats provide essential shelter and food for marine life. However, expanding seaweed production without appropriate safeguards can create environmental risks. The Global Seaweed Coalition promotes science-based standards that help ensure aquaculture develops responsibly and supports healthy marine ecosystems. Its work encourages environmentally sustainable cultivation, responsible resource management and greater consideration of marine biodiversity.

Supporting Coastal Communities

Seaweed farming provides livelihoods for coastal communities in many parts of the world. The Coalition works to promote safer working conditions, sustainable production methods and economic opportunities, including for small-scale producers. Its international network connects local practitioners with researchers, institutions and organizations working to improve the seaweed value chain.

Advancing Research and Innovation

The Coalition supports scientific research, international cooperation and the development of shared standards. It has provided approximately €1.2 million in funding to 24 projects across 26 countries, helping advance innovation and sustainability in the seaweed sector. Through conferences, policy engagement and partnerships, it also encourages governments and international institutions to recognize seaweed's potential contribution to sustainable food systems and marine conservation.

A More Sustainable Ocean Economy

Seaweed has promising applications in food, agriculture, packaging and other industries. Its cultivation may also contribute to climate mitigation and environmental restoration, although outcomes depend on the methods and ecosystems involved. By bringing science, policy and industry together, the Global Seaweed Coalition seeks to ensure that the growth of this sector benefits people and the ocean alike.
