The Baltic Sea Heritage Rescue Project (BSHRP) is an international volunteer-driven marine conservation initiative dedicated to removing abandoned fishing nets from the Baltic Sea while protecting its unique underwater cultural heritage. The project operates under the German nonprofit Baltic Sea Nature & Heritage Protection Association e.V. (BSNHPA), bringing together experienced technical divers, researchers, maritime specialists and conservation volunteers from several countries.
Recovering Ghost Nets
Lost and abandoned fishing gear is a persistent threat to marine ecosystems. These so-called ghost nets can continue trapping fish and other marine animals long after they have been lost. They also contribute to marine pollution and can cover entire shipwrecks. Through its operational initiative Ghostnet Recovery International, the organization locates, documents and recovers fishing nets from underwater sites in the Baltic Sea. These operations require specialized equipment, careful planning and highly trained technical divers. Some survey and diving activities take place at considerable depths, with the organization reporting dives reaching up to 100 meters. Recovered nets are brought to the surface for appropriate handling and disposal.
Major Recovery Operations Around Rügen
In May 2025, the team carried out one of its largest recovery campaigns near the German island of Rügen. Over eight operational days, eleven team members working with three boats recovered approximately four tonnes of abandoned fishing nets from two shipwrecks. Diving operations reached depths of around 45 meters. This achievement demonstrates the scale of the ghost gear problem and the impact that coordinated volunteer efforts can make.
Protecting Shipwrecks and Maritime History
The Baltic Sea contains thousands of historic shipwrecks, many exceptionally well preserved by its underwater conditions. BSHRP combines environmental action with maritime archaeology, searching for, identifying, documenting and protecting wreck sites. Its work includes cooperation with universities, archaeological specialists, museums and public authorities, particularly in Germany and Lithuania.
Training for Safer Conservation Diving
Removing heavy, entangled fishing nets underwater is technically demanding and potentially dangerous. To improve safety and professional standards, the organization introduced specialized Ghostnet Recovery Diver training in cooperation with SDI/TDI. This training helps prepare qualified divers for the unique challenges of underwater net recovery.
International Cooperation for a Cleaner Baltic Sea
BSHRP works with local fishermen, research institutions, public agencies, sponsors and volunteers to protect the Baltic Sea's fragile ecosystems. By combining practical marine debris removal, underwater research and heritage preservation, the project demonstrates how skilled divers can make a direct contribution to ocean conservation. Its mission is clear: remove dangerous fishing gear, protect marine life and preserve the Baltic Sea's underwater history for future generations.
