  • Main problem:
Marine biodiversity loss & ocean degradation
  • Subproblem:
Coral reef decline, poorly understood deep-sea ecosystems & unsustainable ocean use
  • Consequence:
Habitat destruction & inadequate marine protection, Lack of environmental awareness & engagement, Coral reef loss & decline of reef biodiversity
  • Solution:
Marine research, deep-sea exploration, citizen science & conservation education

SpeSeas – Exploring & Protecting the Caribbean Ocean

SpeSeas is a nonprofit marine conservation organization based in Trinidad and Tobago. Founded by Caribbean scientists and conservationists, it works to protect marine ecosystems through scientific research, environmental education and conservation advocacy. Its mission is to improve the understanding, management and protection of the Caribbean's extraordinary marine biodiversity.

Exploring the Deep Ocean

In 2026, SpeSeas led a groundbreaking scientific expedition called Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago and the High Seas, aboard the research vessel Falkor (too) operated by Schmidt Ocean Institute. Led by marine biologist Dr. Diva Amon, the expedition explored previously little-known deep-sea habitats surrounding Trinidad and Tobago. Scientists documented more than 25 active cold seep ecosystems, identified 20 potentially new species and mapped approximately 13% of the country's marine territory. These discoveries provide valuable scientific information to support future marine conservation planning and the establishment of protected areas.

Protecting Coral Reefs

SpeSeas also works to improve understanding and protection of Tobago's coral reefs. Through the Maritime Ocean Collection, the organization helped document underwater reef environments using 360-degree photography, making these ecosystems accessible to the public while creating a visual record for scientific comparison. Its Rescue D Reef initiative combines art, science and environmental education to raise awareness of threats facing Caribbean coral reefs.

Engaging Coastal Communities

SpeSeas encourages public participation in marine conservation through citizen science, educational outreach and collaborative research. Its Turtle Spotter Challenge invites community members to help document sea turtle sightings and contribute to conservation monitoring. The organization also provides scientific input on coastal development proposals to promote more sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

Building a Sustainable Ocean Future

By combining cutting-edge exploration with local knowledge, public engagement and environmental advocacy, SpeSeas helps ensure that marine conservation decisions are informed by science. Its work demonstrates how locally led research can uncover extraordinary ocean biodiversity and inspire communities to protect it for future generations.
