Sea Turtle Conservancy – Saving Sea Turtles

Founded in 1959, Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is the world's oldest sea turtle research and conservation organization. Established through the pioneering work of renowned marine biologist Dr. Archie Carr, the nonprofit is dedicated to ensuring the survival of sea turtles through science, habitat protection, education and international cooperation. Headquartered in Gainesville, Florida, Sea Turtle Conservancy operates conservation programmes across the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific regions.

Protecting Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches

One of the organization's most important projects is located in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, home to one of the largest green sea turtle nesting populations in the Western Hemisphere. For decades, STC researchers and volunteers have monitored nesting activity, collected scientific data and helped protect vulnerable nesting habitats. The organization's work has contributed to the long-term conservation of this globally important sea turtle population.

Tracking Sea Turtles Across the Oceans

Sea Turtle Conservancy uses satellite transmitters to study the movements of endangered sea turtles. These tracking programmes reveal migration routes, feeding grounds and important marine habitats, providing valuable information for conservation planning.Through its popular Tour de Turtles initiative, supporters can follow the journeys of individual turtles and learn about the threats they face.

Science, Education and Advocacy

STC conducts marine research in Florida, Costa Rica, Panama, Bermuda and other locations. Its conservation programmes address threats including fishing bycatch, coastal development, artificial beachfront lighting and habitat destruction. The organization also develops educational resources, works with coastal communities and advocates for stronger environmental protection measures.

Supporting the Future of Sea Turtles

Through donations, turtle adoptions, memberships and conservation partnerships, supporters help finance scientific research, nesting beach protection and education programmes.By combining more than six decades of scientific expertise with practical conservation action, Sea Turtle Conservancy continues to protect sea turtles and the marine ecosystems they depend on.
