Shark Allies – Protecting Sharks Worldwide

Founded in 2007 by shark conservationist Stefanie Brendl, Shark Allies is a US-based nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting sharks and rays through political advocacy, conservation campaigns and public education.Sharks are essential to healthy marine ecosystems, yet many species face severe threats from overfishing, the international shark fin trade, destructive fishing practices and inadequate legal protection.

Fighting the Shark Fin Trade

One of Shark Allies' most significant achievements began in Hawaii in 2010, when founder Stefanie Brendl worked with lawmakers to help establish a landmark ban on the sale, trade and possession of shark fins. The legislation became a model for similar measures across the United States and the Pacific. Since then, Shark Allies has continued working with conservation organizations, policymakers and international coalitions to strengthen shark protection. The organization is also involved in efforts to restrict the shark fin trade within the European Union.

Protecting Sharks and Their Habitats

Shark Allies advocates for stronger fisheries regulations, effective marine protected areas and an end to destructive practices that threaten shark populations. Its campaigns address issues including shark fishing tournaments, harmful fishing gear and the economic importance of living sharks to coastal communities.Through its Shark Watch initiative in Florida, volunteers help monitor shore-based shark fishing activities and report suspected violations to wildlife authorities.

Education and Public Awareness

Shark Allies works to change the way people perceive sharks. Through documentaries, public events, educational campaigns and media outreach, the organization challenges misconceptions and explains why sharks are vital to ocean health. The documentary Extinction Soup, featuring Stefanie Brendl's conservation work, helped bring international attention to the devastating shark fin trade.

Building a Future With Sharks

Shark Allies believes that lasting conservation requires public support, effective legislation and cooperation between governments, businesses and communities.Through donations, volunteering and advocacy, supporters can help strengthen shark protection and ensure that these extraordinary animals continue to thrive in our oceans.By giving sharks a powerful voice in conservation policy, Shark Allies is helping create a future in which healthy oceans and thriving shark populations go hand in hand.
