Founded in 1991 in Princeton, New Jersey, Shark Research Institute (SRI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting sharks through scientific research, conservation advocacy and public education.Established by shark conservationist Marie Levine, SRI became an internationally recognized voice for shark protection, combining scientific evidence with practical conservation initiatives.Following the passing of its founder, the Sea Save Foundation was entrusted with continuing SRI's conservation legacy and international advocacy work.
Understanding and Protecting Sharks
Shark Research Institute has supported scientific studies examining shark movements, behavior, genetics and population dynamics. Its researchers have conducted fieldwork in oceans around the world, using satellite tracking, visual identification and DNA analysis to better understand these extraordinary animals.Whale shark research has been a particularly important part of its work. By studying migration routes and population connections, SRI has helped provide scientific evidence for the protection of critical marine habitats.
Advocating for Stronger Protection
SRI has actively participated in international conservation efforts, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).Its scientific contributions have supported international protections for threatened shark and ray species, while its campaigns have helped raise awareness of the destructive global shark fin trade.
Changing Public Perceptions
Through educational programmes, scientific publications, public campaigns and media outreach, SRI has worked to challenge widespread misconceptions about sharks. The organization has also promoted responsible shark tourism as a sustainable economic alternative to destructive fishing practices, demonstrating that living sharks can provide long-term benefits to coastal communities.
Continuing a Conservation Legacy
Today, SRI's conservation legacy continues under the stewardship of Sea Save Foundation, supporting science-based advocacy and international efforts to protect sharks.By combining research, education and effective environmental policy, Shark Research Institute has helped build a stronger foundation for shark conservation worldwide.
